Her heritage is Mexican-American and is American in nationality. She has always been a sports enthusiast. Gerina began playing golf after she reached the age of 15. Gerina completed her high school education at Goddard High School. In high school, she was the winner of the New Mexico golf state tournament. Also, she was a volleyball player who competed at the national level. Her first college was at the University of Texas. In her final year, she was the winner of every competition she competed in. During undergraduate studies, she earned the titles of Conference USA Female Athlete and Conference USA Individual Player of the year.
