O'Neil auditioned for the third season of Canadian Idol in the early year of 2005, while in high school. She was able to make it into the top hundred round when judges applauded her voice. O'Neil was praised highly by the judges but suffered substantial losses during the Top 10 weeks and Top 9 of the Finals, when she fell to the bottom 3 and bottom 2 in both cases. Judges were shocked by this and advised the audience to select contestants such as Melissa with the best singing abilities. O'Neil was consistently delivering stellar performances ever since, has never finished lower than the top three. Following two stunning performances on the 7th of September 2005, as O'Neil as well as Rex Goudie were able to make it into the final two competitors, the judge Werner said that newspapers in the early morning were going to read O'Neil defeated Goudie to become the third Canadian Idol, the first female winner, and also the youngest champion in the show's history . O'Neil immediately received a call from Canadian premier Paul Martin to congratulate her on her win at Canadian Idol.
